Today, I’m taking a break from writing about student loans, frugality, debt, saving money, etc. Why? Because I’m feeling particularly inspired to write about something else after the lunch experience I had yesterday.
Lunch is usually pretty boring at work. Occasionally, I’ll order something, the order gets messed up, and then they have to fix it. Exciting, eh?
Well, yesterday, all of that changed. It started out like a typical day. I skimmed over the menu and decided to go with the pasta of the day, not really paying attention to what’s in the dish. When I got my dish, I was a little surprised to find a vegetable that I only eat on rare occasions for the reason I’m about to explain.
The vegetable — asparagus. The reason — it makes your urine smell bad (or funny, depending on your sense of humor). For those of you who haven’t experienced the effects of asparagus and urine, it’s actually genetic.
All individuals produce the odorous compounds after eating asparagus, but only about 40% of the population have the autosomal genes required to smell them.
Let’s just say that I’m definitely in the 40% of the population with those genes, and there’s a 40% chance that your date is too. This is why I officially declare that asparagus is the worst food for the first date. In fact, I’ll take it a step further and declare that asparagus is the worst food for any date.

It’s really a shame too, because asparagus tastes great. It’s one of my favorite vegetables, but sometimes the aftermath is just too much.

No stories? You only smell it when they pee right? so whats the problem. I think you should write another post and give us the details on your personal experiences with this.
Very interesting though, I never have heard of that. I think I will look it up.
Why would the smell of your urine matter on a first date? :p
