What’s the Craziest Thing You’ve Done for Spring Break?

by Broke Grad on March 17, 2009

As I sit at my computer and type these very words, college students all over the country are celebrating Spring Break. A couple of years ago, I would have been celebrating too, but things change a lot when you get a job. For example, I get paid when I go on vacation now.

To tell you the truth, I didn’t even realize that it was Spring Break until someone mentioned it in a conversation the other day. How could I forget about the beaches, the babes, and the booze so quickly? This is only my second year without a Spring Break since I started kindergarten. What has happened to me?

All right, I have to admit that I never did anything too crazy for Spring Break in college. There was no partying the week away in Cancun, staying awake for days in Vegas, or hitchhiking across the country. I never emptied my bank account to fund a week of debauchery.

Now that I look back, my Spring Breaks were pretty boring. I point the blame at being in a serious relationship at the time and going to a college far away from home. My girlfriend at the time went to a different college, so we never had Spring Break during the same week. I also felt obligated to take a trip back home to see my friends and family.

Grad school was a different story though. Once I was single again, it opened up a whole new world of possibilities for Spring Break adventures. Unfortunately, my friends and I didn’t choose wisely. Here’s some advice — it’s generally a better idea to head south (or stay south if you’re already there) for Spring Break unless you’re actually planning to go skiing. That’s all I have to say about that.

As you can see, my Spring Break stories are pretty lame, but I’m sure some of you have way more exciting stories to share. What’s the craziest thing you’ve done for Spring Break?

I hope to get a short job or internship during spring break. If that is not an option, I plan to study for a CLEP test. (As you can see, my spring break does not start for a few weeks yet.)

Thanks,
Nate

Back when I was in college I did the coop program which provided me with money. First spring break me and 5 friends drove to panama city, florida in a minivan from Philly. It was great. Then a few years later, I went on a friends bachelor party to Costa Rica, it was absolutely amazing. I did not realize how close to the Equator it was, I got sun burnt within 20 minutes of being in the pool. Amazing time, beer cans that just say “Cerveza” on them and nothing else. Hahaha. So shady yet I still drank it!

I’ve never really went out to Mexico like most people for spring break. But it doesn’t cost that much you can get a bus ticket with friends.

For some reason, I had chances to go but never did. I will one of these days though. I heard it’s bad this year around so I heard. Kidnapping or something is bad out there.

I have been fortunate to have great spring breaks, some pretty wild even though I personally wasn’t a wild child. I went to the Bahamas, Acapulco, backpacked Italy, and Vegas. I had a good run but miss it now.

I spent my last Spring Break flying to London in shorts and a wife beater…not so much “Crazy”, but def. “Stupid” in that it was snowing when we arrived.

Once, a friend and I drove in a big circle around New Mexico. We didn’t really know where we were going to go before we got there. Roswell, by the way, does not have any aliens lurking around, and you cannot be entertained there for a whole day.

Most of my spring breaks were also spent at home. Senior year I went to Cancun with my bf at the time. Although we didn’t have a lot to spend, I still wanted to explore and do fun activities..He just wanted to sit by the pool and read…Lamest vacation ever. I think fun trips south are meant for larger groups, and no books allowed! :)

My funnest trip was before my senior year, a few friends that I went to high school with decided to drive to WA from MN and back. At night, we camped and searched for alcohol (we weren’t old enough, and oddly enough, all of our trips have had that comment in them :) ) During the day, we drove and had a blast!

I’ve competed in speech and debate tournaments over Spring Break. That’s about the most interesting Spring Break I’ve had; not so much crazy as mildly interesting…

Last Spring Break I flew down to Costa Rica with 15 friends of mine to work in a soup kitchen. It was hard work but I loved every second of it.

I never went to any of the “traditional” spring break spots… I spent one spring break in the remote high hills of Argentina painting their medical center and tutoring teachers, locals and students in english (the village was home to 850 or so individuals) and another spring break plane hopping around Brazil with a class studying “culture” for 10 days .

I don’t know how I missed this article but I could definitely add some input. Cancun in 2006, Dominican in 2007, missed 2008, Puerto Plata in 2009. Craziest thing? A week with a bunch of young college students and unlimited booze is crazy enough.
