What Do College Students Want To Know About Money?

by Broke Grad on September 29, 2008

One of my favorite parts of blogging is hearing from my readers and fellow bloggers. From comments that generate interesting discussions to criticisms that explain why you disagree with me, it’s all good. The feedback I get from you really helps make my blog better, because I can figure out what’s good and what needs to be improved.

Last week, I exchanged emails with a college student interested in opening a high-yield savings account at ING Direct. After helping her out, she asked if I had any information on Roth IRAs, because she wasn’t able to find much about them on my site. This made me realize that I haven’t written any articles about them, so I’m in the process of putting one together now.

She went on to say that she was thinking about her financial future now after discovering my blog. While I’ve never been one to refuse a compliment, most of the credit should go to her for taking the initiate to look up information about finances in the first place.

Since starting Broke Grad Student, I’ve received a fair share of criticism on some of my posts, but the most memorable criticism, by far, was right after I redesigned the site. One of my most frequent commentators bluntly wrote, “Try again.” After asking her to explain why, I took some of her suggestions and ended up with a design that was way better than the original.

The feedback that I get from you really does help make this site better, so I’d like up open up the blogophone (a microphone for blogs?) to all of you. What topics do you want to know more about?

I think one thing many current college students want to learn more about is funding options for their education. With tuition prices rising each year, new sources for funding need to be tapped into by college students. This is huge with me because I really messed up with my funding when I did my undergrad from 2001-2006. I did not know any better and did no have much guidance and took out private loans to fund the majority of it. Many kids today get scholarships and grants but there are tons out there who have to figure out their entire college financial obligation themselves, FAFSA only helps so much. My main motive behind this is I just do not want people to have to experience what I did, its one main reason I played a huge role with my younger brother who just began his freshman year. He is attending school on no obligation to my parents and all of it is paid for through a ton of different sources. My two cents, sorry about the novel!

I like the persons idea on Roth IRA, or a comparison between the different retirement fund options.

Also, I am big into traveling so post related to backpacking and maybe where you can get the best bang for you buck plus experience would be.

Doctor S has some great points, but I would like to expand on the idea of “how to pay for college.” To be honest, I need some solid advice on “what to do now that you decided to take out the loans for a private college?” (price tag- approximately $80,000) I realize now that this is the stupidest fiscal decision I’ve ever made (especially since I’m paying it all back myself), but now that I’m 2/3 through school there’s no backing out now. I want to develop a payment plan through which I can still sustain myself and not move back in with my parents when I graduate next December, and advice on how to save while also paying off that much debt would be so helpful. There are great articles on your blog and others in the PF blogging world for high school graduates and college graduates, but it would be great to see more articles aimed at those of us still in school.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Keep ‘em coming, because this is really helpful. You guys have brought up some great topics and also some very difficult ones, which may explain why there isn’t much information about them out there. I’ll definitely try tackling some of these topics over the next month.
