Holy sh*t!
That was my first reaction when an article about my post on why I hate cash was selected as an Editor’s Pick by MSN. As a result, it spent a day linked on the front page of MSN Money.
When I checked my site stats that morning, I was excited to see that my blog had received over 200 visitors already. Then I did a double take when I realized that over 200 visitors had visited in just the past hour.
Needless to say, it was hard to concentrate at work, because I kept checking my stats. By the middle of the day, over a thousand people were coming to my blog every hour. At the end of the day, over 10,000 people visited Broke Grad Student, resulting in almost 20,000 page views.
For lack of a better term, I’m going to call this the MSN Money Effect, or getting MSN Moneyed. It’s the personal finance equivalent of getting Slashdotted, Dugg, Farked, etc. Once again, I’d like to thank Karen Datko and Donna Freedman at MSN Smart Spending for highlighting my post in the first place.
While my 15 minutes of fame were fun, things are mostly back to normal now. With that being said, here are some of the best articles from the College Money Network blogs this week.
- Poorer Than You challenges you to know where your money goes during the month of August by tracking all of your expenses. Hint: Check out the rest of the site, and you may find that there’s more at stake than just knowing where your money goes
- MFA or Bust is excited that she got more money for school just by asking.
- Green Panda Treehouse shares some great tips on how to enjoy eating out for less.
- Grad Girl at This Writer’s Wallet shares how something as simple as giving fifty cents to someone can make your day.
- Spilling Buckets tackles the issue of productivity and the effects of information overload and shrinking effort gaps.
- Broke-Ass Student discusses the recent news that the U.S. deficit for 2009 is projected to be $482 billion.

It’s amazing how quickly stats go up with MSN. Congrats!
