I think I actually NEED at least 7 hours of sleep, I WANT around 9 but I can easily FUNCTION on 3 - 5. I'm currently only in high school & only have to go about 4 hours a week for DL (distance learning) classes. (I go about 2 hours, twice a week)

But even when I was going the full day, I managed on very little sleep. Ha, I've stayed up for an entire weekend before, went to school on Monday & STILL stayed up until midnight on Tuesday before finally crashing from exhaustion. Ironically, when I crash it's the best sleep of my life.

Probably because I'm one of those people who have trouble getting to sleep & trouble staying asleep & when I crash I just sleep. No laying in bed wishing I could sleep & no waking up every 30 minutes without fail.

At the moment I usually get about 7 hours & I feel good with that. If I can actually stay asleep once I lay down then I'm not tired during day, can function just fine & am not a total drag to be around. =]

For me it's not really the quantity of sleep I get, it's the quality that matters. I can get 10 hours of sleep where I wake up multiple times during the night for a few minutes each time giving me a total of 9 hours of sleep & I'll always feel like a zombie when I wake up.

Where as if I get even just 5 hours of sleep without waking up during the night I feel amazing the next day. I think too many people focus on the quantity of their sleep as opposed to the quality. If we spent more time focusing on that then we'd probably all have to sleep less.

I HAVE to move a lot during the day & always be doing something so that I can actually EXHAUST myself both mentally & physically. If I don't drain my brain & body then I can't sleep at night, especially if I don't drain the the brain. Because then it doesn't want to shut down.

So to answer your question, I get about 7 hours of sleep every night. Generally it's quality sleep & I feel great when I wake up. (Even though I'm actually a night person, which is why I pretty much have to do whatever I can to exhaust myself just so I can function.)

But I still take at least one weekend out of a month to stay up completely so I can crash. I usually only sleep for a few hours, about 5 or so, but as I said before it's the best sleep I've ever had & nothing can beat it. All in all, my motto is "listen to your body, it knows what it needs".

If my body needs more sleep, I give it more, if it needs less, I give it less. Following this philosophy I have become a much happier person. I feel better, I look better & I'd say my quality of life is much better than it was when I focused on quantity instead of quality. I don't even need an alarm clock to get up, I have one built-in. I call it my brain, lol. ^_^

P.S. to Taylor... Try drinking some warm milk with vanilla and honey in it. Play a short bit of soothing music that will shut off automatically. Don't watch tv in the hours before bedtime. Make sure the room is dark, even if you have to drape and extra blanket over the windows. Tell everyone else to be quiet, as your sleep time is precious! :)

Apparently everybody is getting by on six but needs eight. I went through a spell of obsessive late night manga reading and still went to work on four or five hours of sleep for a couple months. It was a bit debilitating. After a time, you quite adjust, but it's hard to get back your normal sleep hours. We could universally shut off the electricity at say, eight o'clock and people could only stay up by candlelight. That would increase everyone's sleeping time. House fires too... of course. Bookworms would still burn the candle at both ends.
