Do You Eat Breakfast?

by Broke Grad on March 30, 2009

I’ve never had much of an appetite when I wake up in the morning. In fact, I’m usually not hungry at all. If I had my choice, I would always be sleeping during the hours of breakfast.

As early as elementary school, I remember hearing about the importance of eating a healthy breakfast. It usually went something like this. Students who eat breakfast are more alert and get better grades than those who skip breakfast.

I guess I’m an exception to that rule, because my breakfast of choice throughout middle school and high school was a glass of lemonade. It definitely wasn’t a balanced breakfast, but I still did well in school. Actually, I did better than most of my friends who did eat breakfast.

College was great, because I could try to arrange my schedule to start as late as possible. Sometimes it just wasn’t possible, but the few semesters where I didn’t have a class before noon were awesome. Lunch was my breakfast.

Now that I’m in the real world with a real job, I still don’t have much of an appetite in the morning. I’ve moved on from my glass of lemonade though. My new breakfast of choice, if I eat breakfast, is a banana.

However, when I see my coworkers consistently eating breakfast every morning, I can’t help but wonder if I’m just weird. I guess there’s only one way to find out.

Are you a breakfast eater or or a non-breakfast eater?

Breakfast eater, definitely. But I am also a morning person. I love to wake up with the sun, have a nice bowl of cereal or oatmeal, or some yogurt and fruit, and jump into my day.

I have several friends who also seem to avoid mornings like you do. I have, however, seen most of those who wanted to change, change. But I’m not sure if it ever became natural for them or not. I’m inclined to believe that over enough time it would.

I have never been much of a breakfast eater, but I force myself to eat a small cup of blueberry yogurt every morning with my tea. It keeps me going for the last hour or so before lunch.

I usually don’t feel like eating when I get up in the morning, but I do need to eat something, otherwise I’m dragging by lunchtime.

Homemade-microwaved breakfast burrito every weekday morning. Easy to make, and doesn’t take much time to eat in the mornings. You can eat it while commuting if you are careful about not getting it on yourself.

I have gone back and forth, now that I have a regular work schedule every day I eat a bowl of cereal for breakfast just after I get up every morning. Turn on the tv to see the weather and whatever they might have to say in those few minutes it takes me to eat it.

If I am running late and do not eat breakfast I can really feel it. I think that it really is something that if you start then you get so accustomed to having it that it hurts when you don’t.

I also do not drink coffee, tea or cokes, just cold water so if I don’t have energy I don’t take anything like that to keep me awake either.

Bacon and Eggs every morning. Eggs take less than a minute to cook, I get the pan warm while I’m putting the bacon in the microwave. By the time the bacon is done in the microwave, I’m scooping the eggs onto a plate. Much better than eating a bowl of starch (Aka cereal) for breakfast.

You’re body has been without food / nutrients over night and is thirsting for you to put some good nutrition in it. Morning is a great time to jump start your metabolism and energize with some good eats.

If you want me to be technical (though you probably don’t), my breakfast is at 16:00…. which is after I’ve been up for 8 hours, but I do have a soda in the morning. Breakfast is just breaking your fast, but I don’t think a drink in the morning counts as breaking a fast. Sometimes though I will wake up hungry, in which case I’ll grab a little something to eat as well.

I can’t eat early either – my stomach can’t handle food that early! Usually I’ll have coffee around 8 or so and then have a real breakfast around 10am when I think I can handle it.

I love breakfast foods, but I’m not a breakfast eater most days. During the week, I wake up at 6:45 and get to work by 8. I bring a snack to work for when I do get hungry. If I started work at 9 or 10, I think I’d eat breakfast daily.

Used to be: a pack of Camels, a coke, and a snickers bar.
Lungs are shot, no more smoking.
Fat now, no more candy.
Sick and have to take meds, still have to have the coke to keep the meds down.
If I had to do over, I’d eat the damn breakfast!!!!!

I LOVE breakfast! I will not leave my home until I eat at a minimum of 300 calories worth of food. If I don’t eat a proper breakfast I will not have any energy for the rest of the day.

there’s a study by some psychologists (forgot who, but I can cite you the book if you want) that says that if you usually eat breakfast in the morning and you skip it, it’s bad for you (story of my life, i get majoring hypoglycemic = major headache and cranky). however, if you usually DON’T eat breakfast in the morning (like yourself), then doing so won’t be beneficial to you!

Breakfast foods are great. Personally I prefer brunch over bfast =)

In high school I’d eat weird foods for bfast, pizza rolls, burrito’s, etc.
In college I went hungry freshie/sophie years but w/ early lunches. After that I switched to bfast of milk n’ cereal.
Past summer I went hardboil egg + milk n’ cereal.
These days just milk n’ cereal + fruit + early lunch =)

I get hungry tooo fast haha

I am the exact.same.way, Broke Grad Student. I cannot eat any sooner than 2 or 3 hours after I get up. I still do just fine … valedictorian, all that jazz … maybe if we ate breakfast we’d be rocket scientists?

I eat yogurt and a coffee….mmmmm….coffeee..

I always have a big breakfast, I need to. I can’t wait till lunch to eat and need a big breakfast to start my day. I never did it in college, but also never needed breakfast having later classes and sleeping in later.

I used to not be able to eat first thing in the morning, but I don’t have time to eat after that before lunch, so I trained myself, and I feel a lot better in the mornings now! I’ve recently been making myself a smoothie (including protein powder and flaxseed to get all of that goodness out of the way in one shot) and it’s working out great. It is still the last thing I do before I leave my house, though.

I always grew up with breakfast, so it’s a natural for me. Since I don’t work until 3pm now, though, my breakfast in lunch, too! But, my dinner would be someone’s midnight snack…

My routine isn’t complete with my breakfast. I eat the same cereal (Kashi GoLean Crunch — tasty and protein/fiber) and everything. Though I’m considering switching to oatmeal. It’s cheaper and the fiber keeps you full for awhile.

I was told that the best breakfast is just fruit. Thats it. nothing else until lunch.
I eat breakfast everyday, I’ve switched it up from english muffins, egg sandwich’s, just fruit, dry cereal, toast, you name it. As long as it isn’t crap, it’s good.

Without breakfast, I fall asleep from hunger or get really cranky or sick to my stomach. However, if I eat late at night, I have a tummy ache in the morning.

I love breakfast! I never ate breakfast in high school (would pack fruits to eat during classes), but now in college I am one of the few people who do eat breakfast.

I usually get up two hours before my first class and eat breakfast 30 minutes before my first class so my stomach has some time to settle down. My breakfasts usually consist of an omelet, milk, oj, fruit, yogurt and granola.

Without breakfast I’d never make it throughout the day!

22 Paul Morales March 31, 2009 at 3:13 pm

For me it varies. It depends if I feel like eating/chewing any food or not. At times I can go till 12 or 3 and don’t want to eat.

Or I may make myself breakfast because I’m craving for it.

I should be on a schedule though so it’s not sporadic.

23 Mike March 31, 2009 at 11:51 pm

Depends on how early I wake up. :)

I’ve heard that eating breakfast prevents you from overeating, though in my experience, I just eat breakfast on top of whatever else I’m consuming.

24 DutchSchoolKid April 1, 2009 at 10:30 am

Well, I always eat in the morning.
And I did always eat it on my way to school, but since I just took my time for breakfast, I feel a lot better..

25 Kristy @ Master Your Card April 9, 2009 at 8:01 pm

Well, I’m not a morning person either, so on the mornings I have to be awake, yes, I eat breakfast. On the mornings I get to sleep in, I don’t eat until I wake up which is usually around 12-1 pm. On those days I just have lunch, although sometimes lunch is a bowl of cereal, so take that how you will.

I do believe that having breakfast is helpful, not only from the standpoint that you do better in school/work, but also because of your health. Those who eat full breakfasts tend to eat less junk throughout the day. They feel more satisfied, at least until lunch.

At any rate, yes I eat breakfast.

Much like you, I did not eat breakfast regularly growing up. Usually it was in the form of a Little Debbie Snack. When I got a “real job” I tried to grow up (just a little) and I would opt for a Special K bar.

I’ve since moved to Cali and am living with two girls for the first time (generally I’ve lived with guy friends)… they are extremely healthy eaters and regularly ridicule my eating habits.

Now that I’m unemployed and am often chastized for my diet of sugar and chocolate, I make every effort to eat breakfast… generally rotating between a banana, a bagel, cereal, scrambled eggs, or blueberry pancakes. Oh, and coffee. That’s a must.

I used to only eat breakfast and a big dinner back during my college years (I had a meal plan that only allowed two meals per day), which seemed more than adequate for my needs. Now, I’m off and on with breakfast, although, I usually prefer to grad a snack, at least.
