A friend recently went though this and mentioned that it was useful for her to work with the credit card companies directly and contact a non-for profit consumer protection agency. Now thats she’s on the right track, I suggested she head over to the credit union and take a financial literacy class.

You could use a debt management company (debt consolidation, as you call it) but you also could just do this yourself. All it takes is a phone call to each of your creditors to ask for a debt management plan. The companies have departments that do this for you.

Also, you can request a different payment date so you don’t forget to make the payments on time.

You’ll get the benefit of a 0% promo APR that usually lasts between 6 and 18 months. A few downsides are the balance transfer fee and the fact that, if you don’t pay off your balance by the end of the promo period, you might be responsible for paying the interest on the original transferred amount. Still, a good tool for those who can keep from making additional charges on a BT card while paying down debt.
