One great gift suggestion I recently heard was a quality set of noise-cancelling headphones, particularly in the first year (when many if not most students have roommates). Through my time in college, some of the most helpful gifts I got were a set of non-breakable dishware, a coffee thermos that would fit neatly in the side pocket of a backpack, and a padfolio (which I loaned to several friends for interviews or other important meetings).

Great list!

Wow, I can't believe I completely forgot about a car. It might be because I went to undergrad in a city where I didn't need one. Anyway, I second Ricardo's suggestion that a car would make any college student happy.

I got a couple of gifts when I started UCLA as an undergrad. An expensive swiss backpack, some cash, a mini-fridge... My all time favorite gift however was my brand new Honda Civic!

Dude, I was totally stoked...I got a car as my college present! (Guaranteed to make any college student happy!)

Haha, awesome. Hope your family takes the advice. I'd still prefer cash as well, but I wanted to make a list for people who don't like giving out cash.
